<hi style=afpcap>From no other angle can we get a better view of the enormous wings of the Lockheed U-2R spy plane—so big that they require outrigger wheels at each tip. These lifting surfaces make the U-2R a kind of giant powered sailplane, able to waft through the upper stratosphere for very long periods of time. In this manner, early U-2s made ten-hour trips over the Soviet Union, very slowly, but very high and, for a long time, invulnerable to air defenses.</hi>
